Sony – make.believe.ruin

I finally launched my first android app today and as a reward for working all weekend, I decided to buy some downloadable content (DLC) for one of my favorite games Fallout: New Vegas. So after paying, I downloaded the content and installed it. Started Fallout. There was an update for the game itself, so I downloaded and installed that as well. Started the game and…

…strange, no downloadable content listed. Must be something wrong.

I had a quick look online and someone said it may have been due to the game update being installed after installing the DLC. So I deleted the DLC and re-downloaded. I reinstalled, and…

still no content.

Ergh, look on the forums again, and can’t see much. Look on the psn support site… almost zero company support pages, a crappy faq that primarily deals with their new MUBI service, and a community support tab. I hunt around, no contact details on the PSN support page and finally find a contact link on the PS3 support page, hidden in the right sidebar. I click that and…

Site Maintenance Notice

This page is currently down for maintenance.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

Of course it is.

Finally, I trawl through the community support, which interestingly promotes german and spanish results over english (in fact the first 8 results were not english) and read something about DLC being region locked. Now that’s strange because I’m pretty sure regions are more or less abolished for ps3 games… well not quite it seems: While they all WORK on any ps3, the dlc is region specific so if my game comes from the US (as this one apparently is by decifering the codes), I can’t download and install AU content.

Poor form Sony. REALLY poor form.

Surely, this should be something mentioned in FAQ’s? Or god forbid, something they tell you on installation! What a let down. It just goes to show that Sony, even when they do something good like unlock regions on games or provide ‘install other OS’ functionality, you need to think to yourself….

“How can Sony use this to ruin my day…”

because history shows, that given any opportunity, that is exactly what they will do.

The Annus Horribilis for Sony

There isn’t a tech company more hated by the hacker community than Sony it seems, a string of major security breaches – first the PSN hack which exposed millions of users personal information. Following that Qriocity suffered the same, racking up 77 million accounts compromised. The latest word is that the 3.61 firmware update for ps3 is overheating older consoles, and a rep from inside Rockstar announced that during testing their new game LA Noire they have noticed older ‘fat’ PS3 60GB and 80GB models shutting themselves down after as little as 30 minutes play. This has only been noticed on the consoles running 3.61 and on multiple (rockstar and non rockstar) games.

“At this time we are recommending contacting Sony directly to report the overheating issue. However, this is not the end of our support; we are continuing to test L.A. Noire on all firmware versions and hardware models to isolate the issues and see what can be done. As always, we will update this article as soon as we have updates.”

The article has subsequently disappeared and rockstar have published the usual boilerplate (most probably co-written by the Sony legal team) claiming there was no problem and the representatives opinion did not reflect that of Rockstar.

On one hand, the fact is, these consoles are pretty old, and due to regulations around the lead content of solder, they just don’t last like the older consoles as the lead free solder is known to be brittle. Coupled with the alarmist nature of many outspoken internet denizens who tend to look for a conspiracy under every stone, means things like this very quickly get blown out of proportion. The update features changelog seems to indicate all changes are solely security related so you’d think that it would have little impact on the system.

On the other, Sony, and in particular, their playstations have had a very sketchy build quality history. At last count I believe I went through 4 PS1 consoles (luckily all within warranty) with the last one still chugging along last I heard, being donated to a cousin. I also remember how prone the PSone slim consoles were to overheating after a couple of hours of play too. I’d like to see Sony produce some proof, or a rational, honest dissection of the rumours rather than legalese boilerplate.

I’ve found my 60GB PS3 has been hanging, lagging and running hot since the update. While that could well be coincidence, taking into account my experience with Sony and their build quality, I’m inclined to believe the Rockstar rep was onto something. Covering up something like this is going to just exacerbate customers distrust of the company and while I’m sure they want to avoid any further bad press, covering it up with ‘no comment’ or, even worse ‘everything is fine’ press releases can only be bad.

Goodbye horrific Sony Xperia X1, Hello HTC Desire HD

Echoing has started again on my X1 and in complete frustration I rang Three customer care and unleashed my frustration. Good people that they are (and being that I’ve been with them since the dawn of time) they hacked a huge chunk out of my 7 remaining months of contract and tossed me a new HTC Desire HD. Shameless plug I know, however I really am continually impressed with Three’s approach to loyal customers. To date they have replaced my phone at 3 times:- twice after the LG U8120 fiasco back in the day (the first replacement wasn’t to my taste, the second, the z800i was a favourite of mine) and again with this bloody Xperia X1. After it’s laggy performance, the badly designed buttons, the crappy keyboard with its flaws and sony screwing over its customers by not releasing WM 6.5 despite testing, I’ll not going back to sony for a while.

Echoing on an Sony Ericson Xperia X1

I’ve been having issues with my X1 echoing my own voice back at me when people call me:- a pretty distracting problem and usually resulted in me calling back. I put it in back in June for both that and a faulty keyboard, and they replaced the entire phone.

The replacement X1 started echoing on incoming calls a few days after getting it, and I figured that it was some sort of network wierdness however when my fiancee’s Xperia X10 decided it was no longer going to recharge I took mine in as well to see if they found anything, and sure enough, the earpiece needs to be replaced.
Unusual that I can’t find any reports of others having the same issue considering I’ve had two do the same thing. Interesting to know if anyone else has had the same issue….

Not having much luck with Sony of late:- three phones have needed repairs (the first X1 as well as its replacement alongside the X10) along with an older Z800i suffering keypad woes 18 months into getting it (and out of warranty of course), a ps3 died recently with the red light of death. The new ps3 is now also making some funky grinding noises with certain DVDs, but not blu-ray movies or games.
Think I’ll be steering clear of anything by Sony for a while…..
